Show of Work

It has been a great joy to guide the K/1's through their exploration of Homes and Habitats.  In Science with Kate, Art with Susie, Language Arts, and the woods, the children experienced the wonder of looking deeply.  They are only kindergartners and first graders, yet they were able to accomplish an extraordinary amount of work.  The process took many hours of making and remaking, questioning, discussing, problem solving, cooperating, and exploring in so many different ways.  It has been an exciting journey for all of us.

I wish everyone a peaceful holiday season.

Lots of K/1 Happenings Since the Beginning of the Month......

The children made a class book entitled Peace to share at the Peace Assembly.

This is what the children said about peace:
"Peace is quiet, peace is loving, peace is beautiful."
"Peace means that other people have joy and love inside of them."
"Peace is the world in joy because peace brings the world together."
"Peace is the world coming together because going in you silence goes around
and touches people around the world."

"Peace makes me happy because all my friends are very peaceful to play with."
"Peace means to me that all people have love in their families."
"Peace means when everyone is having a good time and love in their families."
"Peace is I wish everybody has a good family even the people that don't have a family."

"Peace is the love in your heart."
"Peace means that people should always be fair."
"Peace is a really good thing in your heart."
"Peace feels really good and it makes me feel peaceful."
"Peace is love that travels around the world."
"Peace makes the world a better place."

"Peace is being good to friends and having fun with other people."
"Peace makes you smile."
"Peace makes the world a better place because it's more silent."
"Peace makes the world happy."
"Peace makes new friends."
"It makes you feel peaceful after you went in your silence after you were sad."
"Peace makes you feel better."

"Peace is exactly like silence."
"Peace helps you calm down "
"Peace is meditating and feeling really good."
"Peace is love."
"Peace makes you feel better when someone makes you feel bad."
"Peace is happy."

"Peace is finding yourself."
"Peace is wonderful because when somebody makes you sad, you go in your peace and you feel happy."
"Peace is like being very quiet."
"Peace is loving your family."
"Peace is sitting and closing your eyes and thinking hard."
"Peace makes you think of good things."

Homes and Habitats - Science class

The children shared their work on their imaginary idea of a better home for their animals, and had to explain how their ideas made the home better.

Also in Science class the children categorized animals according to what they eat. They took turns drawing pictures at each poster as shown in the photos.

Decomposers

Plants

Herbivores

Carnivores

Omnivores

In Language Arts the children worked on their Homes and Habitats animal research.

They drew pictures to go with their animal facts. The children will be compiling their work on posters to share at the Show of Work.

First Grade Math

The first graders reviewed patterns in preparation to creating quilt patterns.  There will be photos of their quilt patterns in the next post.
Also they created a calendar for the month
of December.  Developing calendar skills is a monthly activity in first grade math.

The first graders have continued to
explore word problems.  Also they practiced describing the characteristics of triangles.

Kindergarten and first grade math enjoyed
an activity together.  Michele read Gingerbread Friends, then the children
took a bite of their freshly baked ginger bread cookies and created a chart of "First Bite."
Which body part got eaten first?

Free Choice Projects

The children have been engaging in "making things" during free choice time. The children are so comfortable
working together and sharing materials.  There are lots of materials available to them and they use everything with skill and wonderful imagination.  The smile on their faces reflects the joy of creating.  They help each other not only by sharing materials, but by sharing ideas as well, and learning from their mistakes.  It is not unusual to hear the phrases, "Try again," or "try a different way," or "use this or that material/tool." Or (my favorite), "Wait a minute and I'll help you."

These girls have been writing a
story during Free Choice (they are using their word walls to help them with spelling.)  It is common for the children to bring skills they learn in language
arts and other areas to Free Choice.

Can you tell what this girl made?

These children learned
about trains from a kindergarten boy who is an expert on trains.

This girl has been drawing "pretty" pictures
and writing during Free Choice.

The magical Block Center!

Until next time.  Have a great week! Liliana
